Default Wont start when hot, slow crank like battery dead but not dead

I had a weird experience last night after I went for a 20 minute ride. Came back home, my roommate was in the driveway. I shut the bike off and moved the car. I went to restart, and it seemed like the battery was dead. It spun over slowly and it dimmed the lights. So I pulled her into the back yard, stuck a voltmeter on it, 12.4volts! I once again tried to crank, it struggled and stopped. I opened the throttle WOT, it cranked a little easier, but then stopped. I put her back in the garage...

HERE IS THE KICKER: I got up this morning and she starts right up, like there wasn't an issue!!! I did not put a charger on the bike over night. I believe this has happened before where I thought it was a dead battery.

- Installed this year, Yuasa High Performance Maintenance Free Battery (YTX14AHL-BS)

- Over 14v measured after 3000 rpm


Any ideas?

Starter damper is going.....going.......gone !
Not a major job - plenty of help and videos in "how to" section
New damper +-$220 from www.mrcycles.com
or you can rebuild your old one - I have some spare plates and cup spring......

It's a fiddly job that requires patience, but I've done it as have many others on here, including Henry, Naga_Thai, and a good few others. Remember to mark the outside of your stator(on the edge) with a magic marker so you don't have to put it back 3 times like I did.........

So the next day I went to start it up, it wouldn't run without having the jump pack on. Then I knew it was something with the charging. Behold, it was not making over 12.3 volts at 3k RPMs or above [even though I had checked it many MANY times before and it exceed specs]. So I thought it had to be the RR this time and assumed this was creating these phantom symptoms of dead batteries at random times.

I got the new RR installed, I was getting over 13 volts at 2k RPMS, this seems to have fixed it. Will let you know if not otherwise.

I have the hard starting thing when it's hot. It does not sound anything like that video shadow posted. It sounds like the battery is almost dead. If you let it cool awhile(10 min) it will start just fine. I have suspected it is just a weak started motor as I had the same problem in a 1968 Chevy Nova same symptoms even.

If you need a starter clutch I have a spare - cost just postage.
That may be the problem........

So, does this damper issue only happen when the bike is hot? I have the opposite problem. When I start it and it is cold it will not start. When I finally get it to start and warm it up, it will start just fine again. Could anyone enlighten me on this?

Bike will start from cold with a blown damper
slips when hot, and sounds like video
Maybe it's the starter clutch.................?
Sounds odd, though, although my bike clutch slips a bit when cold, but never when hot,
so how do you explain it......
Pulling the starter clutch out will take about 2 hours total till she's running again.
Could it be a crappy starter ? Don't know.

If it's not the damper, then it could be the starter motor coil that's worn out, and when it gets hot it expands and "grounds" against the case, making a short on the battery draining all the current so it won't spin until it's cold (shrinks).

Seen this on a couple of old bikes, no big deal to fix. You'll need to have a technician to re-wire the starter motor coil if that's the case, or get a replacement on ebay.
